Polar Bears

Happy Tuesday! Today we read a non-fiction book about polar bears. We learned that non-fiction means it is a real story. The children enjoyed looking at the real photographs in the story, as well as learning more interesting facts about polar bears.

We also sang the song "Polar" again today. The children like this song so we have been singing it multiple times throughout the day as time allows.

Today we visited centers. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.

The first center went fishing for fish to feed to their polar bears. Upon catching a fish, each child had to write down the letter caught. This activity was differentiated, meaning that each child was given fish to work on a needed skill. Some children worked on uppercase letters, others worked on lowercase letters, and yet others worked on beginning sounds.

The second center did some non-standard measurement. Each child measured how many fish tall each polar bear was. First they measured with big fish and recorded the number. Then they measured with small fish and recorded the number. After measuring each polar bear, the children were able to measure different objects around the classroom with the fish manipulatives.

The third center played a polar roll the number race. This activity was also differentiated to focus on a set of numbers each child needs to work on, such as numbers 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, etc. Each child rolled the die, identified the number, and traced it on his/her paper. Play continued until one polar bear cub reached its mom. When this paper comes home, spend some time reviewing the numbers on your child's sheet with him/her.

Then we played. Fishing for letters continues to be in high demand! We have also been enjoying playing a lot of alphabet bingo during playtime!

After snack, we made jello. The children enjoyed seeing the steam coming off the boiling water. It smelled delicious! We put it in the refrigerator to chill. Later this week, we will cut out letter Jj jello jigglers to eat for snack. The children were excited when they realized that jello starts with letter Jj!

We also did the counting jar!

Have a great evening! :)
