Migration

Today we spent some time focusing on birds and what they do in winter. We learned that some birds migrate to a warmer place while other birds stay all winter long. See if your child can tell you some of the types of birds that stay all winter long and which types of birds migrate.

Instead of sign-in today, we made bird feeders to hang up at home to help feed the birds that stay in Wisconsin all winter!

Our story was Lewis Cardinal's First Winter. In the story, Lewis sees all different animals getting ready for winter. He feels left out because all his friends are leaving him to migrate south or to get ready for hibernation. Eventually he meets a friend that stays with him all winter and he is happy again. This was a great story to review all that we have been learning about animals in winter all month.

On the SMART Board, we sorted pictures of animals by whether or not they migrate. We learned that not only birds migrate, but so do monarch butterflies, humpback whales, and several other animals.

Today the children complete two different projects. The first project was to use watercolor paints to paint a picture of a bird that stays all winter long. There were several birds to choose to paint, such as cardinals, blue jays, and chickadees.

The second project was to make a picture of geese migrating south for the winter. The children enjoyed painting with a special puffy paint mixture to make the clouds. Then they drew a sideways V in the "clouds" and stuck on geese in a V shape.

We also enjoyed playing in the classroom and have been working on decorating our valentine holders.

After snack, we reviewed what animals do in winter. The children enjoyed helping to sort animals on the SMART Board into the categories of adapt, hibernate, and migrate.

In the morning session, we also read Duck at the Door, which was about a duck that decided not to migrate with his flock. He discovered that winter was not for him and showed up freezing cold at the door of an old lady who kindly took him into her house to help him survive the winter.

Both classes also did the counting jar.

Next week we will begin a unit on dental health and will have a special visit from Midwest Dental. Our Altrusa visitor will also be coming to read another story next week!

Enjoy the weekend!
