Happy Monday! Today we learned all about penguins! Our story was The Emperor's Egg. We learned some interesting facts about penguins. See if your child can tell you something new he/she learned about penguins today!
One interesting fact that we learned is that the dad Emperor penguin takes care of the egg while the mom goes off to sea to get food. The dad has to hold the egg on his feet to keep it off the ice so it doesn't get cold - and the dad does it for about 2 entire months without food or water! We practiced being Emperor moms and dads. Each child found a partner. One penguin went swimming in the ocean for food while the other tried holding the egg on his/her foot and walking without the egg falling off. Then we switched roles. It was trickier than the children thought it would be! Fortunately no penguin chicks were harmed in our practice! :)
Then we visited centers. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.
The first center listened to the story Penguins 123 and then went fishing for number fish to feed to a penguin. This center reviewed numbers 1-10. If your child cannot consistently identify numbers 1-10, please practice with him/her at home!
The second center reviewed shapes while making a shape penguin. Then children at this center stamped animals onto the letter Aa for their alphabet books.
The third center played a penguin uppercase and lowercase letter matching game. They had to match uppercase letter fish with lowercase letter fish before feeding them to the penguin. Afterwards, some time was spent reviewing letter Pp. Children sorted penguins by whether or not they had a Pp on them.
Then we played. Painting penguins at the easel was a popular choice. Also playing with penguins in the water in the sensory table was a favorite.
For snack, we counted fish crackers onto numbered penguins before eating them.
During snack, we also watched a penguin webcam. It was exciting to see penguins swimming and diving! You can watch them at home too by clicking on the links below. If you time it right, you may even get to see the penguins getting fed! Please note that some of the webcams only work during the day as they do not have night vision.

During closing circle, we learned all about letter Aa. We read some stories about Aa.
We met our feely phonic friend, apple a.
We also did the counting jar in both sessions today.
The morning session also had a special visitor today - a student teacher from NWTC. She will be here every Monday and Tuesday morning. Her name is Ms. Anschutz. She will also meet the afternoon session students briefly on Tuesday afternoons, staying only for lunch with the afternoon.
Have a great evening!
