Our story today was The Mitten by Jan Brett. This is a fun story and helped us learn some new vocabulary, such as mole, badger, and hedgehog.
Then we made our own mittens and animals from the story to use to practice retelling the story! Each child sewed together a large mitten. Then we colored the animals, cut them out, and wrote our name on the back of each animal. Some children even remembered to look back at the book to remember what color each animal was when coloring. Afterwards, each child practiced telling the story to a teacher. See if your child can tell you the story tonight at home using his/her mitten and animals!
Then we played. Most children enjoyed finding mitten matches in the sensory table!
After snack, we got to do the counting jar for the first time! Each child got a turn to guess how many were in the jar. Then we counted them together. This activity is great for learning number sense, rote counting, and number recognition! The children can't wait to see what is in the counting jar tomorrow!
Then we got to act out the story of The Mitten. This was a favorite activity that the children asked to do over and over again! We acted out the story multiple times and I'm sure several children will also choose to act out the story during playtime tomorrow!
