Commotion in the Ocean

Happy Thursday! Today we were excited to welcome some Sturgeon Bay 4K teachers to our classroom. They were visiting to see what we do in our 4K program. The children did a great job of showing them all the great things we do in our classroom! We took time to introduce ourselves to our visitors and shake their hands.

Today we read a rhyming story titled Commotion in the Ocean. This book helped us learn about a variety of ocean animals. There were sea stars hidden on each page in the book.

We read a nonfiction story to learn more about sea stars. Ask your child what he/she learned about sea stars today!

Miss McCabe even let each child touch a sea star. We talked about how it felt. Most children described the sea stars as feeling bumpy and rough.

During playtime, the children were invited to make their own sea stars to hang on our ocean mural. We glued on oats to make our sea stars feel bumpy like a real sea star!

Each child visited centers today. Ask your child which center he/she visited.

The first center helped write about their favorite ocean animal. After drawing a picture with crayons, we watercolor painted the ocean over the top.

The second center made an orange octopus Oo alphabet book page. We had to cut out the letter Oo, count 8 tentacles onto each Oo, and used a pencil to curl the tentacles.

The third center made an ocean animal counting booklet. It was fun using ocean animal stamps on each page in the booklet.

Then we played in the classroom.

In the morning, we celebrated Caleb's birthday. Thanks for the special treats, Caleb!

After snack, we sung the song "Slippery Fish." Then we got out our puppets from yesterday. Each child got into groups by type of ocean animal they had. We talked about which group had more, less, or the same. Of course, we sang the song using our puppets! When their animal was named in the song, they got to dance in the middle of the circle until the next animal came along to eat them! There was a lot of laughter! We had a great time acting out the song!

We also did the counting jar today.

Please remember to wear red and white on Monday in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday! We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss all week.

Enjoy the weekend!
